Product Manager

What's Bench? Check us out in Forbes Top 30 Under 30, The Vancouver Sun, Inc.com, Entrepreneur Magazine, and our Instagram.

We're a laid back group of people working hard on a tough problem. Bookkeeping is a universal point of pain for passionate entrepreneurs trying to pursue their dreams. They want to run their businesses, not do accounting, so we make that disappear. While the appeal of the problem may seem lacking, we genuinely believe that solving problems is super sexy. And so are you.

When you throw in with us you're not only joining a company that's changing the way business is done, you're joining at an inflection point. Bench is post Series B, capitalized by a team of Silicon Valley and New York investors, and scaling fast. This is an extraordinary leg of our journey and becoming instrumental to the team now would pretty much make us best friends forever.

As the Product Manager for Client Experience you'll be a quarterback, forging the links between the needs of our clients and the needs of our business, then collaborating with a cross-functional team to execute. With a deep understanding of our clients, our operations and our market, you'll be in a position to influence not only the products you manage, but the strategic direction of Bench. You will drive the design, development and maintenance of Bench's client-facing web and mobile tools which form the lynchpin between our bookkeeping service operation and our clients, and enable us to deliver an unrivaled client experience. In parallel, you will be a critical part of the team responsible for identifying and creating new sources of value for Bench's current and potential clients.

Reporting directly to the VP of Product & Strategy, you will work closely with the Product Management team, our Operations, Marketing and Sales managers, software developers and UX designers.

This position requires a balance between tactful planning and roll-up your sleeves execution. You are encouraged to be contributor as well as a leader, as we believe in leading from the front. This is an incredible opportunity for anyone who is passionate about building an exceptional client experience, and who values a healthy balance of metrics-based optimization and creative experience design.

Here's what you'll be getting up to:

  • Lead product direction for major initiatives at Bench
  • Clearly articulate/define problems
  • Conduct research to help guide product decisions, help shape roadmap & priorities
  • Work closely with engineering, design, and other internal teams to improve the user experience - from understanding the problem through to shipping beautiful software.
  • Mock up concepts, write user stories, and work with developers to plan realistic development sprints
  • Communicate our plans, goals, and progress across the company

You're a great fit if you are:

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in product management in a fast-paced startup environment
    • Note: Will give consideration to non-traditional candidates with exceptional track-record and references from 3+ years in Management Consulting at a Big 3 Strategy firm
  • Track record of successfully managing and shipping products on a large scale
  • Experience communicating technical concepts to a non-technical audience
  • Experience leading diverse/cross-functional teams
  • Experience designing and conducting multiple forms of research
  • Exceptional communication skills and an ability to speak the language of a diverse set of stakeholders (Executives, engineers, designers, etc.) to create alignment
  • High degree of comfort working with quantitative and qualitative data to drive decisions

Other details and benefits:

  • This is a full-time position, because we want to spend lots of time with your wonderful self
  • This position offers an annual salary based on experience
  • We offer an extended benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, massage, and a Wellness Fund
  • Our downtown office is close to lots of great restaurants and easily accessible via transit
  • We have a progressive work environment where you're free to manage yourself like a grownup. Our team regularly cycles between in-office and remote work depending on the kind of projects we're working on
  • Best of all, you get to play fetch with our resident Wheaten Terrier, Zoe Deskennel
