The Netflix recommender system delights more than 93 million accounts (and over 200 million people) across the world with high-quality content recommendations. Our algorithms power much of our global product including such areas as computational advertising, search and adaptive streaming. That said, the crux of the opportunity revolves around improving our video recommendation system. We are constantly striving to improve and evolve the algorithms that power this system, and with the massive amount of data we collect everyday, there are endless opportunities to do so! We aim to become the world leader in this space but going global and cold-starting new titles (Netflix originals) has presented new and difficult challenges. The opportunity for huge wins awaits: to date, Netflix has amassed tens of billions of play events and ratings to fuel personalized video suggestions.This presents endless algorithmic possibilities to delight the world with high-quality video recommendations.

We are looking for a VP of Product Innovation for Algorithms to spearhead these efforts and lead a strong team of senior directors. The executive we seek cares deeply about user experience, and will help guide the team toward forming many clear hypotheses for potential improvements to our recommender system. You will lead cross-functional teams of software and research engineers, data scientists, and statisticians. You are conversant enough with advanced mathematical modeling and analysis, particularly some combination of probabilistic modeling, statistics, optimization and machine learning, that you are aware how these tools can solve problems rather than being an end in themselves. You naturally gravitate towards experimentation, particularly A/B testing, as a way to validate your hypotheses while having a healthy skepticism when interpreting experimental results.

Our VP of Algorithms may come from a wide range of backgrounds: likely someone who has led product managers, and/or engineers and/or data scientists in the pursuit of algorithmic innovation for a successful software company. Perhaps our future leader is a pragmatic academic with high level management chops, a generalist's curiosity and an expert in various algorithmic approaches and experimenting within complex systems...

As a high-level executive we want a strong internal and external communicator, someone who knows how to discuss and explain complex subject matter to both the expert and the layman. We also want a curious individual who is ready to contribute and debate on the strategic issues that Netflix confronts. A strong interest in TV/movie content is a huge plus. Our goal is nothing short of revolutionizing the way people consume their entertainment around the world.
