It’s an incredibly exciting time for this industry, and Shopify is right at the centre of it. As our newest product manager you’ll be a crucial part of that change.

The product opportunity

Building a new business is hard. There are hundreds of decisions to make and new entrepreneurs often resort to trial-and-error to learn what works. As a result, many of them run out of time or money and are forced to abandon their dreams. Yet, Shopify helps 600k+ businesses sell millions of products every year. We know what works and what doesn’t, and what’s trending up or down. We can help reduce the difficulty of building a business by helping merchants make the right decisions.

That’s why we’re building an AI platform to scale data-driven recommendations across Shopify. We want to pass on Shopify’s 10 years of learning to our merchants to help them grow their business. To do that we need to empower our product teams to focus their machine learning and data science efforts to ship high-impact, relevant and trusted recommendations for our merchants. This is a unique opportunity to create a data product that touches millions of users and is deeply embedded across Shopify.

Product Management at Shopify is a hands-on role. PMs here work with merchants and their customers, Data, Engineering, UX, and other internal teams to decide what products we build and why we build them. We are the glue that unites all aspects of a product under a single, cohesive vision. We are a passionate and entrepreneurial group of ex-company founders and experienced product leaders getting shit done at scale.

What will I be doing?

  • Building out the vision and evangelizing it across the company
  • Defining and guiding the long term product strategy
  • Leading the product team to shipping and learning every single week
  • Collaborating every day with designers, researchers, data leads and engineers
  • Collaborating with internal teams to turn their ideas into useful recommendations for merchants
  • Building close relationships with a variety of internal teams who are working in data and AI
  • Defining measurable success metrics, and driving alignment for all product efforts to those measures

What experience do I need

  • You’re a seasoned product leader: you can fill in the white space and turn ambiguity into a compelling vision and a high-functioning team that ships often
  • An entrepreneurial mindset. You must be comfortable rolling up your sleeves, thriving in chaos, and getting shit done
  • Interest and exposure to products that use machine learning and data science techniques: recommendation and discovery systems, bots, predictive features, etc
  • Incredible soft skills: you should welcome failure as an opportunity to learn, actively seek and act on feedback, listen well, and empathize with others
  • Great communication skills: ability to write and speak about complex topics in a straightforward way for audiences unfamiliar with the details
  • We love to see experience founding and running your own company, but at minimum you need to have built software products from scratch
